How to Release Anger & Live a More Fulfilling Life

By

Everyone in life gets angry at some point unless you are a self-realized master. This can happen with important situations and everyday kinds of things – we get cut off in traffic, someone doesn’t return our phone call, we get laid off from our job, the children are fussy or your husband is watching the news when you could really use his help. Sometimes all it takes is a look from someone or the tone of their voice or use of a particular word and suddenly we’re barking back at them or seething inside. And, later we might feel confused by our reaction even if we acknowledge it or feel it is justified.

Our minds can race with thoughts of downright anger or even revenge as we feel our blood pressure rise. This rise in blood pressure then in turn takes over and any calmness we were feeling goes right out the window. This kind of stressor in the form of anger can be a contributing factor toward depression, heart condition and much more in between. There are times we just don’t want to let it go and others where we don’t know how.

In order to reduce our anger levels drastically, it’s very important to lead a balanced lifestyle. We may not see how different aspects of wellness relate to our issues of anger, but the way we live our lives undoubtedly affects the way we feel. Being overweight, not enough sleep, lack of exercise, little time for relaxation or fun, an insanely busy schedule, over-worked at our job or being under other types of stress can lead to an outburst or implosion of anger. Without much warning, suddenly we become irritated or even enraged by the smallest situation. One small scenario that upsets us out of the blue can leave us feeling frustrated, inadequate, ashamed or embarrassed.

A tendency towards episodes of anger and how we feel about ourselves can be connected to our lifestyle choices. When our lifestyle is out of whack, often it’s because we are focused more on the outside world and in some way we are paying the price for it. The fix to bring a lifestyle back into balance can be found when we learn how to tune in to our inner being to find the resolutions and peace we are lacking.

As you work on your lifestyle balance and tuning in to your inner power, there is an exercise you can do to assist in the release of anger before it takes a stronghold. It’s a fairly easy method of gaining perspective about what is going on. Ideally, you would do this exercise on the spot when you’re feeling angry. However, that’s not always possible so keep it in mind and do yourself a big favor by following up later on.

Here’s the exercise – grab yourself a pen and paper and find a quiet place where your triggers aren’t going to be a bother. Once you have found your spot, start writing. Write about what is bothering you, why you felt anger or frustration earlier or at the moment, and if necessary who or what exactly the target of your anger is.
Keep writing until all negative feelings have been written on those pages. From being angry at the dog across the street for barking or because you lost your job or you can’t seem to change a bad habit or whatever, just write, write and write some more. When you are sure these pages contain all issues currently provoking feelings of anger, stop writing and read everything you included in these pages. Take responsibility and acknowledge each item you wrote about and your part in the episode. After all, only you can change your angry reactions.

To finish with this exercise, find a safe location in which you can burn these notes. As you watch them burn away, imagine your anger disappearing along with the words on the pages. This is a great way to release pent up feelings without getting into the blame game with others.

If your attempts at managing anger bring some relief that is great. However, when an issue remains or the anger continues, but the target just keeps changing, or something overwhelming crops up, then that’s the time to get some help with your process. Anger can have roots in your childhood experiences, your subconscious mind and even in your genetics. A coaching approach such as Serenity Empowerment Coaching can get at the roots and the seeds and the foundations of anger no matter what the source is and clear the blocks and barriers to a peaceful and harmonious life.
